Diabetes Bracelets and Medical ID for people with diabetes

The importance of diabetes Medical ID
Diabetes can be a difficult and deceptive condition to live with, mainly because blood glucose levels can suddenly rise then drop, when this happens, a blackout can occur that can require medical attention. It is more dangerous to administer incorrect medication to you when the need is crucial, especially when experiencing a hypoglycemia as any mistake in medication at this point could be very life-threatening, and any delay could cause irreversible damage.

Wearing diabetes medical ID will ‘quickly’ inform the medical professionals about your diabetes so they can immediately detect the cause of the blackout and administer the proper medication and make the appropriate medical decisions to save your life, or stop further complications arising.

Remember medical emergencies and accidents occur that are not diabetes related, and medical treatment that is otherwise safe and effective for someone without diabetes could put your health at risk, this is often the case when a person is treated without the medical staff knowing that they have diabetes. However, if proper diabetes medical ID were in place, this would be avoided. Medical ID is an inexpensive way to protect your or your loved ones health and life.

Diabetes medical ID should be worn at the pulse point, on your wrist as a diabetes medical ID bracelet, diabetes medical ID band, diabetes medical ID watch or around your neck as a diabetes medical ID necklace, the Medi-Tag brand is the UKs leading brand of medical ID for diabetes, specialising in medical ID that is fashionable yet practical to ensure they are recognised as medical ID and not merely a piece of jewellery.

What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a common yet chronic disease that arises when the pancreas, a gland which lies just behind the stomach does not produce enough insulin, or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces.  Insulin is a hormone that enables cells to take in glucose from the blood and use it for energy. Failure to produce insulin, or for insulin to act properly, or both, increases glucose levels in the blood known as hyperglycemia. Insulin also stimulates the liver to absorb and store any glucose that is left over.

Diabetes can cause serious medical complications if not managed well, and is linked to long term damage to the body and the malfunction of some organs and tissues. Wearing medical ID for diabetes is another step to managing your diabetes, ensuring in a medical emergency your diabetes medical ID will speak for you and save further complications that could otherwise arise.

There are two main types of diabetes:

Type 1 Diabetes also known as insulin dependent diabetes or juvenile onset diabetes, is caused by an auto immune reaction where the body’s defense system attacks insulin producing cells. It can affect people of any age but usually occurs in children and adults under the age of 40. This form of diabetes requires daily injections of insulin in order to control the levels of glucose in the blood.

Type 2 Diabetes sometimes called no-insulin dependent diabetes usually occurs after the age of 40 and develops when the body can make some insulin but not enough, or when the
insulin that is produced does not work effectively. It can often be managed by diet, oral medications, and sometimes insulin injections.

Statistics show that diabetes is a global problem and one that is increasing at an alarming rate here in the UK, creating some of the biggest health challenges ever faced.
